This is not a criticism but the AppDrops web site says "AppDrop is a proof-of-concept" and makes no clams of scalability. If you develop a web2py app with or without the app engine you can seamlessly run on a postgersql or oracle behind a load balancer and it is available today, tested by many users (240 registered). I agree with you there will be alternatives but I have not seen them yet.

<a href="http://appdrop.com/" rel="nofollow">AppDrop</a> provides a (mostly) compatible migration path away from AppEngine. AppEngine compatibility will be a standard offering at many shops before long. Sure, it won't have Google's BigTable, but when you REALLY need to move your app, you find ways to deal.

You may want to check out www.web2py.com. It works on the appengine (including its own orm http://www.dotnetmafia.com/blogs/jamesashley/archive/2008/05/13/581.aspx) and it is very easy to port Django code (http://mdp.cti.depaul.edu/AlterEgo/default/show/101). The same code that runs on appengine will run on any other system using sqlite/mysql/postgresql or oracle.
