Treadmill Desk Article in the Christian Science Monitor
Posted by shimon under shimon , shimon/my brilliant ideas[4] Comments
The Christian Science Monitor has a nice treadmill desk story. The story is by Amy Farnsworth and the accompanying photo is by Mary Knox Merril. Makes for a good intro to the treadmill desk idea… not that I’m biased.

This is great. I like your setup. I am expecting my treadmill (a Nordictrack C2155) to arrive at my own Massachusetts workplace on Tuesday of this week but don’t have a desk ready for working on it. Did you build your desk or is this something you purchased? I was considering cutting a large desktop from 3/4″ plywood that would fit over the top of the treadmill and securing it to the treadmill with brackets under the handles. Mainly, I want to be sure that I have enough space on my desktop to be able to both work with several documents and type on my keyboard. And I’ve spent a pretty penny on the treadmill so I don’t have a lot to spend on the desk now. Guess I’m headed over the hardware store.
I found your website via the Office Walkers social network, by the way.

Alien Citizen: Thanks! My desk is all self-built. I strongly recommend keeping your desk (at least the part with your monitor on it) free-standing rather than building it on the treadmill itself; that’ll keep vibrations caused by walking from reaching your monitor. I have a pretty simple keyboard/mouse shelf which rests on my treadmill’s handlebars; it is attached with industrial-strength velcro (available at home depot). There is also a little section on the left side, barely visible in the CS Monitor photo, on which I keep a notebook and some documents (or sometimes my lunch).

Thanks for the information! I’ll go ahead and mount my monitor to the wall near the treadmill then to keep it separate from the vibrations. Industrial Velcro is such a cool idea. I’m going to look for some on my next trip to the hardware store.
By the way, I took more away from your blog than an idea for treadmill desk design. I really like your plan to do one project a week (it looks like this is going very well for you!). Doing very short projects works really well for me because, once I lose interest, there is little hope. Fortunately, the job I have right now is keeping my interest but something more like what you are doing or freelance writing or web design (which I did in college) would be ideal. Anyway, I’m rambling…in short, I’ve very much enjoyed all the awesome ideas. Also, if you are ever looking for another programming project I have a couple of ideas centering around education (the first idea is a program for professors/teachers and to the best of my knowledge doesn’t exist and the other one is for students and may already exist for all I know). Feel free to email me if you are game to hear what they are.
